In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing rural connectivity and promoting economic growth, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday approved the launch of a special campaign to construct 20,000 kilometers of link roads across the state at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore. The ambitious project will improve infrastructure in rural areas, offering citizens better commuting facilities and boosting local trade and business.
Mann, during a key meeting, emphasized that link roads are essential to the state's economic development, acting as vital arteries for transportation and goods movement, especially in rural areas. He pointed out that many of these roads had been neglected despite their critical importance and were in dire need of repair and upgrading, with some having surpassed their six-year lifespan without significant maintenance.
He outlined a clear strategy for the construction, categorizing roads into three priority groups — top priority, priority, and needy. A thorough on-ground survey will be conducted to identify roads that require immediate attention, ensuring that the construction plan is both efficient and need-based. The government has also mandated that contractors, responsible for these roads, will be held accountable for maintaining the roads for a minimum of five years, ensuring long-term durability.
The campaign’s scope includes the widening, strengthening, and upgradation of the existing road network to improve accessibility and connectivity across Punjab’s rural areas. “This initiative will not only improve the daily commute for rural residents but also contribute to the region's economic prosperity by making the transportation of goods and services more efficient,” said Mann.
A key feature of the project will be the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology into the construction process. Mann highlighted that AI techniques would be employed for the need-based construction of these roads, which would help optimize resources, reduce costs, and ensure the highest quality standards.
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of ensuring transparency in the utilization of funds. The Public Works Department (PWD) and the Mandi Board have been tasked with monitoring the expenditure to ensure judicious use of public money. In addition, the feasibility of third-party checks will be explored to guarantee that the work meets the required standards and is completed within the stipulated time frame.
