In a proactive move to promote menstrual hygiene awareness and sustainable health practices, the Outreach Department of Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC), Jamshedpur, under its CSR initiative through the Manipal Foundation, conducted a two-day awareness and distribution drive across five government schools in East Singhbhum district.
The initiative aimed at empowering adolescent girls by providing access to biodegradable sanitary napkins and educating them on safe usage and eco-friendly disposal methods. It reflects MTMC’s deep commitment to community health, adolescent well-being, and environmental consciousness.
Experts from the Manipal Foundation conducted interactive awareness sessions in each school, which included: Live demonstrations on the use and washing of reusable napkins, Discussions on menstrual health and hygiene, Tips on safe disposal practices and Q&A sessions to break taboos and encourage open dialogue
“Our goal is not only to address menstrual health but also to foster environmental responsibility and dignity among adolescent girls,” said a representative from the MTMC Outreach Department.
The sanitary napkins distributed are made from natural materials like cotton and banana trunk fibre. These reusable napkins can be washed, sun-dried, and reused for up to three years, making them both cost-effective and eco-friendly—an ideal alternative to conventional plastic-based disposables that contribute to long-term waste.
