In a significant move to promote wildlife conservation and eco-tourism, the Madhya Pradesh government has declared a new wildlife sanctuary in Sagar district, naming it Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Abhyaran. The sanctuary, spread over 258.64 square kilometers, was officially notified ahead of the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, to be observed on April 14.
The newly announced sanctuary will encompass forest areas in the North Sagar Forest Division, including parts of Banda and Shahgarh tehsils. It aims to strengthen biodiversity conservation efforts in the region while offering a safe habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. With this initiative, the state not only seeks to protect its rich natural heritage but also generate sustainable livelihood opportunities through eco-tourism for the local communities residing in and around the sanctuary.
The naming of the sanctuary after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar carries symbolic significance, aligning environmental preservation with the values of social justice and inclusivity that the revered social reformer stood for. The government’s timing of the announcement underscores a tribute to Ambedkar’s legacy while marking a progressive step in environmental stewardship.
Officials believe that the sanctuary will serve as a model for integrated conservation and development, balancing ecological needs with socio-economic benefits. The move is also expected to attract nature enthusiasts and tourists, giving a boost to the local economy.
Forest officials have stated that preparations are underway to develop basic infrastructure within the sanctuary, including watch towers, interpretation centers, and eco-tourism facilities to ensure effective wildlife monitoring and tourist engagement. Additionally, awareness campaigns and community participation initiatives will be launched to involve local residents in conservation efforts, ensuring that they not only benefit economically but also become active stewards of the environment.
