Networking as a Model

Saturday, 12 April 2025 | Rachna Tiwari

People often ask me, “Rachna, what was your big break?” And while I’d love to say it was a single show or shoot, the truth is less glamorous — it was relationships. Every major opportunity I’ve had came through a connection. In the fashion world, your network is just as important as your portfolio. Maybe even more.

Let me tell you a little secret: the modeling industry isn’t just about who you are — it’s about who knows you. So if you’re an aspiring model wondering how to make the right connections without feeling like a social climber, here’s my behind-the-scenes guide to networking with purpose and style.

1. Show Up, Even When You Don’t Feel Ready

Industry events, fashion weeks, brand launches, showroom openings — these are gold mines for building connections. The key isn’t to walk in like a superstar, but like someone who belongs. You don’t need to be the loudest person in the room — just present, polite, and prepared.

Pro Tip:
Before you attend an event, do your homework. Who's on the guest list? Follow them on Instagram. Know their work. If you meet them, you’ll have something thoughtful to say — not just, “I love your stuff.”

And please, don’t underestimate the power of a thank-you message the next day. It's old-school, but unforgettable.

2. Make Friends with the Team Behind the Camera

Photographers, stylists, makeup artists, casting directors — these are the unsung heroes who can shape your career. A good shoot isn’t just about you looking good. It’s about collaboration. When you treat every person on set with respect and kindness, they remember you. And guess who they recommend when the next big campaign rolls around?

Here’s what works:

  • Arrive on time. Better yet, early.
  • Bring positive energy. No diva vibes.
  • Share BTS shots and tag everyone on social media.
  • Keep in touch, but don’t overdo it. Let the connection grow organically.

One of my first editorial shoots happened because a stylist I met on a student fashion show remembered how easy I was to work with. That one job led to five more. It’s a domino effect.

3. Be Social — but Smart

Yes, social media is a tool — if you use it right. Follow people you admire, comment thoughtfully, share your journey. But don’t chase clout. Be genuine. Engage with others like you’re at a conversation, not a performance.

DM Etiquette 101:

  • Never just say “Hey.”
  • Be polite, direct, and professional.
  • Compliment someone’s recent work before asking for advice or collaboration.
  • Always thank them for their time, even if they don’t reply.

4. Build Your Tribe

Not every model is your competition. Many are your community. I can’t count how many castings I found out about from fellow models who became friends. We lift each other up, share tips, vent about hard days. These friendships will keep you grounded.

Make time for your tribe. Celebrate their wins. Collaborate on passion projects together. The industry is tough — having real support makes all the difference.

Final Word

Networking isn’t about collecting contacts. It’s about building connections. Real, meaningful ones. You don’t need to know everyone — just the right ones, deeply. Your talent will get you noticed. Your relationships will get you remembered.

So next time you’re at a casting, an event, or even on set — be present, be kind, be curious. The fashion world is full of beautiful faces. Let yours be the one they remember for how you made them feel.

SEE YOU AT THE NEXT SHOOT — OR MAYBE AT THE AFTERPARTY.
