MPTC’s ‘Samrat Vikramaditya The Heritage’ inaugurated in Ujjain

Tuesday, 01 April 2025 | PNS | Ujjain

A new chapter has been added to the rich heritage of Ujjain with the inauguration of Samrat Vikramaditya The Heritage, a newly constructed hotel developed by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Corporation. The grand opening ceremony was attended by Honorable Governor Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice & Parliamentary Affairs (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal, and State Minister for Higher Education, Technical Education, and Ayurveda Inder Singh Parmar.

Speaking at the event, Governor Patel extended his best wishes on the inauguration and the commencement of Vikram Samvat 2080. He emphasized that Ujjain, a city where Lord Mahakal resides, where the legendary poet Kalidasa composed his timeless works, and where the great Samrat Vikramaditya established a legacy of justice, has now witnessed yet another historical milestone. He remarked that restoring and redeveloping the ancient Maharajwada building into this heritage hotel is not just about renovation but also about preserving the cultural and historical identity of the region. He described the hotel as a unique blend of tradition and modernity, providing world-class amenities to tourists while retaining the essence of the past. The facility will cater to both tourists and devotees of Lord Mahakal, offering modern comforts and Ayurvedic treatments like Panchakarma. Congratulating the Chief Minister on the successful completion of this project, Patel expressed confidence that it would enhance the tourism landscape of Ujjain.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, in his address, highlighted the state's transition from heritage conservation to modern development under the leadership of the Prime Minister. He noted that this initiative marks the beginning of a new era for Ujjain, reminiscent of the just and prosperous rule of Samrat Vikramaditya, often compared to Ram Rajya. He stressed the importance of reviving and celebrating the best traditions of Sanatan culture while preserving the city's glorious past. Reflecting on history, he pointed out that Ujjain faced destruction in 1235 under Iltutmish but was later revitalized during the reigns of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharaja Scindia, who contributed significantly to its architectural and cultural restoration. Several historic buildings, previously used as government offices, are now being preserved as heritage sites, with Samrat Vikramaditya The Heritage being a prime example. Developed by restoring the Maharajwada building, which earlier served as a school, the new hotel breathes life into history and offers an enriching experience to visitors.

Union Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal, while addressing the gathering, made an interesting historical reference to a grand palace in Bhikampur, Bikaner, Rajasthan, which he speculated might belong to the era of Vikramaditya. He suggested further research into the subject, expressing his enthusiasm for learning more from Ujjain, the sacred city of the legendary ruler.

Governor Patel and Chief Minister Yadav formally inaugurated the hotel with traditional rituals and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Following the event, dignitaries toured the premises to review its facilities. The ceremony witnessed the presence of several notable personalities, including Member of Parliament Anil Firojiya, MLA Anil Jain Kaluheda, Shri Shivprakash, Mayor Mukesh Tatwal, Municipal Corporation President Kalavati Yadav, Principal Secretary of the Tourism Department Shivshekhar Shukla, Managing Director of the Tourism Corporation Ilaiya Raja T, and other distinguished guests.

Developed at a cost of Rs 17.90 crore by the Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation, Samrat Vikramaditya The Heritage is a state-of-the-art facility aimed at enhancing tourism in the holy city of Baba Mahakal. Located in the precincts of the Mahakal Temple, the hotel is designed to provide tourists and devotees with a comfortable and enriching stay, seamlessly blending modern technology with heritage architecture.
