Steel demand to grow despite global challenges: Chandrasekaran
Jamshedpur: Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran on Monday emphasized that the demand for steel will continue to rise, regardless of global geopolitical uncertainties. Speaking at the 186th birth anniversary celebration of Tata Steel founder J N Tata, Chandrasekaran highlighted the importance of efficiency, cost management, and productivity in facing such challenges.
“The demand for steel will continue to grow, and the best way to address this is by maintaining efficiency, managing costs, and increasing productivity,” he stated. He stressed that government support, policy frameworks, employees, and worker unions will play a crucial role in the company’s adoption of new technologies.
“The management has to be bold in expanding, ensuring efficiency, managing costs, and enhancing productivity while continuing investments, including in Jamshedpur,” he added.
When asked about the ongoing debate on tariffs, Chandrasekaran dismissed speculation over price fluctuations. “There is no point in discussing tariffs, we have to focus on our productivity,” he asserted. Tariffs, which are import duties imposed and collected by the government, impact companies bringing foreign goods into the country.
On the semiconductor industry, Chandrasekaran emphasized its growing significance across multiple sectors, including electronics, healthcare, defense, and aerospace. “We must be self-sufficient in this field, and the Tata Group has already invested in semiconductor plants in Assam and Gujarat,” he said.
