A heat wave is expected to sweep across several parts of Madhya Pradesh beginning April 16, with Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain, and the Chambal divisions likely to be most affected. Prior to this, light rain is forecast in some eastern districts, according to the Meteorological Department.
The department has predicted soaring temperatures across Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Chambal, and Narmadapuram divisions, with mercury levels expected to cross 40°C. Simultaneously, a reduction in rainfall and storm activity is anticipated, signaling the onset of dry and intense summer conditions.
On Tuesday, Ratlam emerged as the hottest location in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 42°C. A distinct weather divide was noted across Madhya Pradesh, with cloudy skies and light drizzles in some areas, while others continued to endure rising heat.
Meteorologists have indicated that this mixed weather pattern will continue on April 16, with light showers likely in a few districts. However, a heat wave alert has been issued for 11 districts, and the heat wave is expected to persist on April 17 and 18 as well.
Over the past 24 hours, scattered rainfall was recorded in the Narmadapuram and Jabalpur divisions, while the rest of the state remained dry. Ujjain experienced a particularly warm night, further adding to the region’s rising heat concerns.
Daytime temperatures across divisions showed varied trends—Rewa and Shahdol divisions recorded temperatures 1.7°C to 2.9°C below normal, while Ujjain division was 1.9°C above normal. Other divisions remained within the normal range.
Night temperatures also deviated from the norm in a few regions, standing 1.9°C to 2.2°C above normal in Bhopal, Indore, Narmadapuram, and Ujjain divisions, while remaining steady in other parts of the state.
Among notable readings, Khandwa registered 41.1°C, and Narmadapuram followed closely with 41.2°C. Among major cities, Ujjain topped the chart at 40.8°C, followed by Indore (40.1°C), Bhopal (39.5°C), Jabalpur (38.6°C), and Gwalior (37.7°C).
Looking ahead, the Meteorological Department forecasts a gradual temperature rise of 2°C to 4°C over the next four days, followed by a slight drop of 2°C to 3°C thereafter.
