Hand over Maha Kumbh mgmt to army: Akhilesh

Thursday, 30 January 2025 | PNS | Lucknow

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has demanded the immediate handover of the Maha Kumbh administration and management to the Indian Army, citing a loss of faith in the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the event.

His reaction came after the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj early Wednesday morning. He strongly condemned the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which has reportedly claimed 15 lives.

He demanded that those responsible for falsely claiming a “world-class system” at the event take moral responsibility for the tragedy and step down from their positions.

In a strongly worded post on X, Yadav criticised the state government for failing to deliver on its promises of a “world-class system,” which he claims has been exposed by the incident. He also called for those responsible for the mismanagement to take moral responsibility for the lives lost and resign from their positions.

“In order to re-instil faith in the system among the saint community and devotees who have come to the Maha Kumbh, it is necessary that the administration and management of the Maha Kumbh should be immediately handed over to the army instead of the UP government and administration,” the SP president said in the post.

“Now that the truth behind the claims of ‘world-class system’ has been exposed, those who were making these claims and spreading false propaganda should take moral responsibility for the people killed in this accident and resign from their posts,” he added.

He called the accident a result of chaos and appealed to the government to take strict measures. He demanded that the seriously injured should be sent to the best hospitals by air ambulance. “There should be a system to identify the dead and hand over their bodies to their relatives and send them to their hometowns. Special efforts should be made to reunite the missing devotees with their families as soon as possible. Surveillance should be increased by helicopter so that such incidents can be prevented,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Congress made serious allegations against the state government regarding this accident. Congress state president Ajay Rai said, “The stampede during the Mauni Amavasya bath in Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. This accident reflects the mismanagement of Maha Kumbh and the failure of the UP government. Instead of spending in the interest of the public, the Yogi government wasted all the money on its branding and marketing.”

He claimed that the party was constantly warning the administration, but the government did not pay any attention.

BSP supremo and former chief minister Mayawati also posted on X, “The news of the death and injury of devotees in the stampede in Maha Kumbh is extremely sad and worrying. May God give strength to the affected families to bear this grief.”

The CPI (ML) said that due to mismanagement of the government in Maha Kumbh, there have been many deaths in a stampede on Mauni Amavasya. The party mourned the deaths and expressed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. State secretary Sudhakar Yadav said, in a statement issued on Wednesday, that the government was responsible for a large number of deaths.

“To hide its failure, the administration was avoiding giving correct information about deaths. The attention of the Yogi-Modi government was more on looting the credit of organising Maha Kumbh and less on providing smooth arrangements for the devotees coming to Sangam city. The government is playing with the lives of pilgrims to take political mileage. The entire government staff was engaged more in VIP management, less in crowd management. The government had no care for the common man,” he said.

The state secretary said that this was the second major failure after the fire in Maha Kumbh. The government made ‘shows’ in Maha Kumbh, like the cabinet meeting, VIP dips, and distributing invitations across the country, but it failed in providing proper arrangements on ‘ground zero'.

“Videos of the scene were heart-rending. The chief minister should take accountability,” he added.

The CPI (ML) leader demanded proper treatment of the injured, taking concrete steps to prevent the recurrence of the incident, action against the responsible, and compensation to the families of the deceased.
