Six health institutions in the district have been handpicked to provide free, confidential counselling services for adolescents aged 10 to 19. This initiative aims to address their physical, mental, and emotional challenges.
The services are available at Umang Health Centres in Jayprakash District Hospital, Civil Hospital Bairagarh, Civil Hospital Kailashnath Kaatju, Civil Hospital Berasia, and Community Health Centres in Kolar and Gandhinagar.
Operating from 9 AM to 4 PM, trained counsellors provide guidance in a safe, confidential environment to help adolescents manage various issues.
Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Prabhakar Tiwari underlines the importance of supporting adolescents during this crucial developmental stage. "Providing the right guidance and support helps shape better citizens for the future," he said.
Adolescents make up 22% of India’s population, highlighting the need for specialised health services. In 2014, the Government of India launched the National Adolescent Health Programme to better address the needs of this age group.
Counsellors at Umang Health Centres provide advice on sexual health, substance abuse prevention, menstrual health, mental well-being, and more. The centres aim to offer comprehensive support for young people.
In addition to counselling, the centres organise health days and outreach activities to raise awareness about adolescent health. These initiatives help spread important information to a wider audience. The services also address issues like child marriage prevention, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence, offering crucial support to adolescents. Adolescents can receive tailored advice on anaemia prevention, family counselling, and the harmful effects of substance abuse. The focus is on improving overall health and quality of life.
