Gandhi Medical College (GMC) will soon offer in-house CT scan and MRI services at Hamidia Hospital under new National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations requiring hospitals to manage these facilities themselves. The shift aims to improve patient convenience and streamline diagnostic services at the government-run hospital.
The hospital administration has completed preparations, with a Rs 6 crore CT scan machine being installed in Block One. A Rs 12 crore MRI machine is expected within a week. Currently, these services operate under a private partnership in the old hospital building, requiring patients to travel 700 metres in extreme heat, often on stretchers or wheelchairs, to access the facilities. The new in-house services, set to begin in April, will be located near the emergency department, ensuring immediate access for critical patients.
Both hospital authorities and caregivers believe this transition will not only reduce patient discomfort but also enhance efficiency in emergency care. Delays caused by the long commute to the diagnostic centre often prolong treatment. With the new arrangement, emergency cases will receive quicker diagnoses, leading to faster medical interventions.
Meanwhile, GMC has also received renewed approval for kidney transplants at Hamidia Hospital. Seven transplants have been successfully conducted, but the eighth was delayed due to technical reasons. With clearance now granted, preparations are underway to resume the procedure soon, further strengthening the hospital’s organ transplant capabilities.
