East Singhbhum to get district-level indoor stadium

Wednesday, 16 April 2025 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The administration has instructed the identification and proposal of land for the construction of a district-level indoor stadium (1 acre) within the district headquarters and an 8-acre multi-sports stadium in Chakulia block.

In a significant step toward enhancing sports infrastructure in East Singhbhum, a proposal to set up a district-level indoor stadium was put forth during the District Sports Management Committee meeting held at the Collectorate Auditorium, Jamshedpur. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC)  Aniket Sachan, was convened under the directions of District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner  Ananya Mittal and focused on bolstering athletic development and infrastructure across the district.

During the meeting, key discussions were held to identify and allocate land for the construction of a modern indoor stadium at the district headquarters. The DDC instructed the District Sports Officer (DSO) to coordinate closely with the Additional Deputy Commissioner and the Officer-in-Charge of Tata Lease to expedite the identification of a suitable 1-acre plot for the proposed facility. The proposal, once finalized, will be sent for administrative approval and funding allocation.

The proposed indoor stadium is expected to serve as a hub for year-round training and hosting of district-level competitions in various disciplines, including badminton, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, and more. It will cater not only to professional athletes but also to school and college students, amateur players, and sports enthusiasts from across the district. Officials emphasized that such a facility would greatly help athletes practice even during monsoons or extreme weather conditions, which currently hinder year-round training.

Alongside the indoor stadium, the committee also discussed the identification of 8 acres of land in Chakulia block for the development of a multi-sports stadium, which would serve as a regional center for outdoor sports activities.

The DDC further directed the District Sports Officer to compile a comprehensive list of all sports clubs and associations active in East Singhbhum, with a focus on verifying their registration status. He emphasized the need for greater transparency and accountability in the functioning of these bodies to ensure they are actively contributing to the growth of sports in the region.

In a move aimed at supporting grassroots talent, directions were issued to promote awareness regarding the Player Welfare Fund and to take necessary action for the appointment of certified trainers in the district’s day-boarding sports programs. These trainers will play a key role in identifying and grooming young athletes from an early age, particularly in government schools.

The committee also proposed the utilization of retired trainers and former athletes for imparting free sports training in government schools. The DSO was asked to prepare a list of such experienced individuals and collaborate with the District Education Officer and District Education Superintendent for their placement in schools under suitable arrangements.

Another key agenda item was the registration of Sidho-Kanhu Youth Sports Clubs under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The DDC directed all Block Development Officers (BDOs) to ensure timely completion of registration processes and mobilize local participation through these clubs.

Many noted that a dedicated indoor facility in the district has been a long-standing demand of local athletes and coaches, and its realization would mark a transformative shift for sports in East Singhbhum.
