A fierce encounter between security forces and Maoist insurgents unfolded today in the dense forested region bordering Chotanagra and Jaraikela police station areas of West Singhbhum district, resulting in the martyrdom of a brave constable and serious injuries to another jawan.
According to a press release issued by security officials, the incident occurred during a major anti-Naxal operation underway in the hilly and forest terrain of the region. The Maoists, in a calculated move, launched an attack on security personnel using firearms and a rocket launcher, intending to inflict maximum damage and disrupt the advancing forces.
The joint security forces, comprising units from CoBRA 203 Battalion, Jharkhand Jaguar, and Jharkhand Police, immediately launched a retaliatory counter-offensive, effectively engaging the Maoists. However, taking advantage of the thick forest cover and difficult terrain, the insurgents managed to flee the area after facing heavy resistance.
During the encounter, two personnel were seriously injured in the rocket blast triggered by the Naxals: Head Constable/Radio Operator Vishnu Saini of CoBRA 203 Battalion. Constable Sunil Dhan of Jharkhand Jaguar.
Both injured personnel were airlifted to Ranchi via helicopter for advanced medical treatment. Tragically, Constable Sunil Dhan succumbed to his injuries during the course of treatment and was declared martyred.
The condition of HC Vishnu Saini is reported to be stable, though he remains under close medical supervision.
The Jharkhand Police and all the joint forces involved in the ongoing operation have paid heartfelt tributes to Constable Sunil Dhan for his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. His bravery, dedication, and selfless commitment to duty will be remembered as an inspiration for generations of security personnel.
Security officials issued a statement honoring his martyrdom, saying, “We salute the courage and sacrifice of Constable Sunil Dhan, who laid down his life in service to the nation. His sacrifice will not go in vain.”
The encounter is part of an extensive anti-Naxal campaign launched in the region to eliminate insurgent strongholds, dismantle their logistics networks, and ensure lasting peace in Naxal-affected zones. Operations have been intensified in recent weeks, especially in remote tribal belts like Kolhan and Saranda, where Maoist activities have historically posed a security challenge.
Officials have confirmed that the operation will continue unabated, with increased vigilance, enhanced intelligence sharing, and reinforced troop deployments in high-risk areas. The administration has also assured that the martyr’s family will be provided all due support and honors.
