Bokaro, one of Jharkhand’s key industrial cities, continues to await air connectivity despite its airport being fully constructed and ready for operations. Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), Bokaro was selected among four cities in Jharkhand to facilitate commercial flights. However, while Deoghar Airport commenced operations on July 12, 2022, Bokaro Airport remains grounded due to administrative delays and unresolved clearances.
The primary hurdle cited for the delay is the pending security vetting process and the absence of obstruction lights on the chimneys of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) where according to COC BSL M.K. Dhan, the installation of these lights is in progress and will be completed soon. Additionally, obstruction lights need to be installed on towers at Satnapur Hill for aviation safety clearance. Despite these known challenges, the lack of urgency in resolving them raises concerns.
Notably Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured last year that Bokaro Airport would soon be operational. However, shifting political dynamics and slow action have left the project in limbo. Despite multiple discussions and reassurances, no decisive action has been taken to resolve the bottlenecks preventing its launch.
The prolonged inactivity of Bokaro Airport is frustrating for residents. Many fear that the airport will remain an unused asset rather than a functional transport hub. “The infrastructure is deteriorating without use. If authorities don’t act swiftly, this airport may become a museum rather than a transit point,” remarked a local citizen .
Overall Bokaro Airport’s operational status remains uncertain despite its readiness. Bureaucratic delays and safety concerns persist, but the lack of urgency in resolving them is a glaring issue. Authorities must expedite clearances and necessary modifications to prevent this crucial project from turning into a symbol of missed opportunities. Will it finally be operational, or will delays continue to push it towards redundancy? Frustrated residents say it is already becoming more of a showcase than a functional transport hub.
