BMC Commissioner leads push to make Bhopal garbage-free

Friday, 11 April 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

In a marathon meeting with officials, Municipal Commissioner Harendra Narayan on Thursday ordered sanitation teams to work at full capacity to achieve a garbage-free city tag for Bhopal.

The review meeting, attended by health officers, supervisors and zone heads, focused on ensuring "visible cleanliness" across central verges, side verges, backlanes, drains, main roads, green belts and market areas. The commissioner directed that all dry and green waste must be mandatorily cleared by 9 am each day, with a strong emphasis on night-time sweeping and waste collection.

Officials were told to prioritise waste segregation at source. Narayan stressed that dry, wet and other categories of waste must be collected and transported separately, and only segregated waste should reach garbage transfer stations. Vehicles must operate strictly as per schedule and complete their designated number of trips.

The commissioner instructed officers to immediately take up widening and desilting of all clogged or narrow drains to ensure smooth water flow during summer showers. Cleanliness around rotaries, open spaces and road dividers was also prioritised to enhance the city’s public appearance.

Those not complying with segregation norms, dumping construction debris on roads, using single-use plastic, or failing to use green safety nets at construction sites will face strict spot fines. All officers were also told to remove unauthorised posters and banners and penalise those defacing public property.

Separately, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) continued its enforcement drive and imposed spot fines totalling Rs 38,250 in 222 cases across different zones. Offences included dumping debris on public roads, not segregating waste, defacing public spaces, open urination, and using banned polythene. The administration reiterated its appeal to builders to use green nets during construction or face continuing penalties.
