BIS pushes for curriculum integration of standards in Indian universities

Friday, 11 April 2025 | PNS | Indore

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) successfully conducted its Annual Convention for BIS Standardization Chairs and Nodal Faculties from MoU Partner Institutions at Hotel Marriott, Indore, on April 8–9, 2025. The two-day event brought together 63 delegates representing 58 academic institutions, all part of BIS’s growing academic partnership network.

The convention was chaired by BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari (IAS), with senior officers Rajeev Sharma (DDG, Standardization) and Chandan Bahl (DDG, International Relations) also in attendance. The objective was to strengthen BIS's collaboration with academia by embedding a culture of standardization and quality in higher education.

In his inaugural address, Tiwari highlighted the expansion of BIS's academic partnership from one institute to over 100 in just three years. He called the initiative a shared national mission, urging institutions to integrate Indian Standards into curriculum and co-curricular activities, including workshops, exposure visits, and student engagement in industrial applications.

Rajeev Sharma emphasized the omnipresence of standards in daily life and their role in quality, safety, and competitiveness. Chandan Bahl reviewed achievements under the MoU, including integration of standardization modules in 15 institutions, over 130 R&D projects, and the formation of 198 Standards Clubs across 52 colleges. Over 3,400 students have participated in BIS-organized national quizzes, and 500 internships are planned for the academic year 2024–25.

Five institutions—IIT Roorkee, SSEC Chennai, NIT Jalandhar, SVCE Chennai, and PSNACET Dindigul—were felicitated for outstanding performance in BIS-linked activities.

Focused group discussions on curriculum integration, R&D participation, and student engagement highlighted success stories, challenges, and future strategies. The convention concluded with an open house session, reinforcing the commitment to academic collaboration as a driver of quality education, innovation, and national development.
