BIS educates jewellers on hallmarking regulations

Thursday, 13 March 2025 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jamshedpur Branch Office, organised a Jewellers Awareness Programme at Shiv Vatika in Koderma district on Wednesday. The event aimed to educate jewellers about regulatory updates, hallmarking requirements, and Indian Standards related to the jewellery industry.

The awareness session saw an enthusiastic participation of around 60 jewellers, including both registered and non-registered traders. Officials from BIS provided detailed insights into the latest hallmarking regulations, the registration process, and the documentation required for online applications. Currently, hallmarking has been made mandatory in 361 districts across India, ensuring better consumer protection and standardization in the jewellery sector.

During the session, jewellers were also briefed about critical Indian Standards (IS) applicable to the industry, including IS 1417, IS 2112, IS 1418, IS 2113, and IS 15820. These standards ensure the purity, quality, and authenticity of gold and silver ornaments.

BIS officials emphasized the importance of compliance with these standards, not only to maintain quality and safety but also to enhance consumer trust in the jewellery trade. The session was interactive, allowing jewellers to clarify doubts and discuss concerns related to hallmarking, certification, and business practices.
