The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jamshedpur Branch Office (JDBO), successfully conducted a Resident Welfare Association (RWA) training and awareness programme at Estate Square 1 society in Ranchi on Tuesday. Organized as part of the World Consumer Rights Day celebrations, the initiative aimed at educating residents about quality standards and their consumer rights. Around 60 residents actively participated in the programme.
During the session, residents were engaged in discussions about the importance of the ISI mark, which ensures product quality and safety. A special highlight was the enthusiastic participation of women residents, who showed great interest in understanding the BIS Gold Hallmark and learning how to verify the purity of their gold jewellery. For certain electronic and IT products, the BIS mandates 'CRS Mark' under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) to ensure products meet the specified standards, requiring manufacturers to register and declare conformity.
BIS officials also introduced attendees to the BIS Care App, which allows consumers to authenticate products and verify their certification status. Many participants downloaded the app and explored its features firsthand.
As part of its commitment to consumer awareness, BIS is conducting various outreach programmes in observance of World Consumer Rights Day. These initiatives include engagement with students, rural communities, gram panchayat leaders, industry representatives and state government officials. Expanding its reach, the BIS Jamshedpur office is also taking this awareness drive into residential societies across different cities.
Earlier, on March 8, 2025, the JDBO had successfully conducted an RWA programme at Sai Vedanta Society in Adityapur, Seraikela-Kharsawan district. The event, which focused on educating residents about quality standards and consumer rights, saw enthusiastic participation, with attendees requesting more such initiatives in the future.
