Bipolar Disorder Day was observed in the state capital on Monday to raise awareness about this mental health condition, focusing on symptoms, treatment, and early intervention.
A screening and awareness camp was held at the District Jai Prakash Hospital, under the National Mental Health Programme. Experts shared insights on the disorder's signs and management.
Bipolar disorder causes extreme mood swings, from euphoric highs to deep depressive lows, affecting relationships, work, and daily life. Symptoms include fatigue, risky behaviour, and concentration issues.
Causes may include genetics, neurochemical imbalances, and stress. Treatment involves mood stabilisers, antidepressants, cognitive-behavioural therapy, and family support. Healthy lifestyle changes also help manage symptoms.
There are three types: Bipolar I (severe highs and lows), Bipolar II (less severe highs but deep depression), and Cyclothymic Disorder (mild mood fluctuations over two years).
Chief Medical Officer, Dr Prabhakar Tiwari underlined the importance of mental health while informing of free services at the hospital and the 24/7 Telemanas helpline: 14416 or 18008914416.
