Another suspected case of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) has come to light in Jharkhand. A 7-year-old girl from Koderma has been admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) Hospital in Ranchi in critical condition. The girl is being treated in the pediatric ward under the supervision of Dr. Sunanda Jha.
Family informed that the girl had gone to Mumbai with her family a few days ago, where she fell ill. She was also treated there, but the condition did not improve. After returning, her health deteriorated further, after which she was brought to the hospital, they added.
Attempts were first made to admit the girl to a private hospital, but due to lack of ration card, she was not admitted under the Ayushman scheme. Later with the help of the World Health Organization (WHO), she was admitted to RIMS. Due to non-availability of ventilator bed in the pediatric ward, she was shifted to another department and treatment was started.
A suspected patient of GBS is also admitted in Balpan Hospital located at Booti Mor. The condition of this 5 and a half year old girl remains critical and she has been kept on ventilator. A team from RIMS reached Balpan Hospital on Friday and gave necessary instructions after discussing with the treating doctors.
Director of RIMS, Dr. Rajkumar said that separate beds and ventilators have been arranged for the patients of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The facility for testing this disease is available in the hospital, so there is no need to panic. The Chief Minister is also keeping an eye on this matter and his instructions are being followed.
GBS is a disease whose exact cause is not known at present. However, it usually occurs after infection. In this, the immune system of the body mistakenly attacks the nerves. It can also damage the nervous system. Its first symptom is tingling in the hands and feet. These sensations can spread rapidly and in severe cases can lead to paralysis. There is no cure for it yet but treating the symptoms can speed up the patient's recovery. GBS is believed to occur when the immunity power is low.
A patient infected with GBS has diarrhea, stomach pain, fever and vomiting. This disease can also be caused by contaminated water or food.
Generally doctors recommend boiling water before drinking it. Apart from this, open or stale food should not be eaten. If someone feels weakness along with muscle strain, then one should immediately consult a doctor.
