Bhopal parliamentarian Alok Sharma on Saturday came out in support of the new Waqf Amendment Bill, promising that the new provisions will end years of corruption and land encroachments.
Sharma claimed that influential figures—nicknamed Chacha, Mamma and Pahalwan—had illegally seized Waqf land. He accused them of registering land in one place but building elsewhere using dubious gift deeds.
He said such activities will now be strictly punished under the new law. “Those who grabbed land will go to jail,” Sharma declared, calling it the end of Waqf-related corruption.
The Waqf Amendment Bill has already cleared both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. It is now awaiting the President’s signature to officially become law.
Sharma said the bill aims to benefit poor Muslims and women. He linked it to the earlier Triple Talaq law, calling it another step towards justice and reform.
The MP also accused Congress leaders of misusing Waqf properties. He alleged they took control of land via the Waqf Committee and rented it out for personal gain.
He listed Sikandari Sarai, Laxmi Talkies and Arif Nagar, before asking the names of those who held illegal control of these Waqf properties.
Calling himself a “son of Bhopal”, Sharma said he listens to the voices of Muslim youth, mothers and sisters, and will act on their concerns.
He cited Siddiq Hasan Lake near Taj-ul-Masajid, where he claimed hospitals were built overnight. He warned that fake registries and fraud will now be punished.
