The AIIMS Bhopal has achieved another significant milestone by successfully conducting its eighth kidney transplant under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. This accomplishment underscores the institute’s dedication to providing advanced medical care and new hope to patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease.
The recipient, a 25-year-old male from Bhopal, had been battling kidney disease for the past three years and had been on dialysis for the last one and a half years. In an extraordinary act of selflessness, his 31-year-old elder brother donated one of his kidneys, granting him a renewed chance at life. The donor’s kidney was removed using a laparoscopic technique, a minimally invasive procedure that involves a small incision in the abdomen. This advanced surgical method reduces post-operative pain, accelerates recovery, and minimizes scarring. Remarkably, the donor was able to move around the very next day, indicating a swift recovery.
The entire transplant procedure was conducted under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, ensuring that the patient received comprehensive medical care without financial burden.
Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal Prof Ajai Singh congratulated the medical team and emphasized the significance of this achievement. He stated, "This milestone is a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of our multidisciplinary team. It also reflects the spirit of human compassion, with a brother’s selfless act giving a new lease of life.
At AIIMS Bhopal, we are committed to providing the best medical care to our patients, and this transplant under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana ensures that financial constraints do not hinder life-saving treatment. Our organ transplant program will continue to grow, bringing hope and healing to many more patients."
The successful procedure was carried out by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team. The nephrology team was led by Dr. Mahendra Atlani, while the urology team included Dr. Devashish Kaushal, Dr. Kumar Madhavan, Dr. Ketan Mehra, and Dr. Nikita Shrivastava. The anesthesia team was represented by Dr. Vaishali Waindeskar, Dr. Sunaina Tejapal Karna, and Dr. Shikha Jain. Their combined expertise and unwavering dedication played a crucial role in the success of the transplant.
AIIMS Bhopal continues to expand its organ transplant program, reaffirming its commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare. With such initiatives, the institute remains a beacon of hope for patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease, ensuring access to life-saving treatment without financial constraints.
