7 killed as wooden platform of ‘Nirvana Laddu Parv’ collapses

Wednesday, 29 January 2025 | PNS | Lucknow

A major accident marred the ‘Nirvana Laddu Parv’ of the first Tirthankara in Jainism, Bhagwan Adinath, in Baghpat, on Tuesday, as a wooden platform within the Manastambha complex crumpled, leaving seven dead and trapping over 50 devotees beneath the debris.

The unexpected collapse resulted in a chaotic scene filled with panic and confusion as rescue efforts were launched at the site. The absence of readily available ambulances meant that many of the injured were transported to hospitals via e-rickshaws.

Emergency responders from the Badaut police team quickly arrived to manage the situation and assist in the ongoing rescue operations, further highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident. He directed officials to immediately reach the location, expedite the relief efforts and prioritise the provision of proper medical treatment to the injured. Additionally, the chief minister expressed his wishes for the speedy recovery of all those affected by the unfortunate event.

Baghpat District Magistrate Asmita Lal and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya rushed to the district hospital to enquire about the well-being of the injured.

Asmita Lal confirmed five deaths while two more deaths were reported from hospital but the identity of the victims could not be ascertained. The others were identified as Taraspal (80), Amit (40), Usha (65), Vineet and Kamlesh, all of Baghpat.

It may be mentioned that earlier this month, at least six people were killed and 35 injured in a stampede near one of India’s busiest and richest temples, Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, popularly known as Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh. The stampede happened after thousands of devout Hindus assembled there to secure free visit passes.

Meanwhile, in another unfortunate incident, a tractor and Bolero collided in Rae Bareli which resulted in the death of three, while three others were injured.

It is reported that the driver of the tractor fled after the accident.

According to reports, the injured met with an accident while returning after taking holy dip in Prayagraj Maha Kumbh. They were rushed to a hospital, where two were said to be in critical condition.

“These people are from Telibagh. There was an accident in Rae Bareli, and all of them were brought here by ambulance,” Emergency Medical Officer Atul Pandey said.

In another tragic accident, four friends died in Deoria on Monday night. The four youths were going home by motorcycle after celebrating their friend’s birthday. The youths were crushed by a truck near Yadav Hotel near Hetimpur highway in Mahuadih police station area.

On receiving information, the police reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

The deceased were identified as 22-year-old Ankit Gaur, 20-year-old Pintu Gaur, 22-year-old Atul Singh and 22-year-old Nitesh Singh. They had come to Deoria late Monday evening to celebrate their friend’s birthday.
