In a series of tragic incidents over two days, six children drowned in separate bodies of water within the district.
On Tuesday, four children drowned in a government quarry located in Udsuggi village, within the Garhwa police station area. The victims, aged between 8 and 16, were identified as Lakki Kumar, 8, son of Avadhesh Ram; Akshay Kumar, 12, son of Santosh Ram; Narayan Chandravanshi, 16, son of Babulaal Chandravanshi; and Hariom Chandravanshi, 13.
Reports indicate the children had left their homes to play before entering a water-filled pit adjacent to a small pond. The depth of the pit is believed to have contributed to the drownings. Villagers were alerted to the incident, but were unable to rescue the children. Local residents recovered the bodies and transported them to Sadar Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. SDO Sanjay Kumar visited the hospital to meet with the families and gather information.
In a separate incident on Monday, Divya Kumari, a 12-year-old girl from Parati Kushwani village, Ketar block area, drowned in the Son River. According to family members, Divya Kumari, daughter of Deepak Kumar, was bathing in the river near her home with other family members when she entered deeper water and drowned. A search operation was launched following notification of the police, and the girl's body was recovered after two hours with the assistance of police and villagers.
Also on Monday, Roshan Kumar, a seven-year-old boy, died after drowning in a pond in Matauli village, within the Chainpur police station area of the Palamu district. Roshan Kumar, son of Arvind Baitha, was bathing with friends when he reportedly drowned in an unfinished well inside the pond. After he failed to resurface, the other children alerted villagers, who recovered the boy from the water. He was taken to Ranka Hospital, Garhwa, where he was pronounced dead.
