2 Jharkhand cadre IPS officers play key role in Rana’s extradition

Friday, 11 April 2025 | PNS | Ranchi

Terrorist Tahawwur Rana was extradited to India today. Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian national, was convicted in the US for the banned terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives and providing material support to the group responsible for the Mumbai attacks that killed over 174 people.
Rana's extradition marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

The Indian government, especially the NIA, played a key role in extradition of Rana to India. Several bureaucrats and IPS officers were involved in the mission. Two IPS officers, IG Ashish Batra and DIG Jaya Rai, who were given the responsibility of bringing him to India are both from Jharkhand cadre.

IG Ashish Batra and DIG Jaya Rai, both are on Central deputation and are posted in NIA. These two officers were given the responsibility to complete the process of bringing Tahawwur Rana to India.

Tahawwur Rana was brought to Delhi today (April 10) by a special plane. After landing the special plane at Delhi's Palam Airport, it has been kept under heavy security arrangements.

Ashish Batra is an IPS of 1997 batch and Jaya Rai is of 2011 batch. Ashish Batra has been posted in NIA for the last five years. In Jharkhand, he has worked as City SP in Ranchi, Jamshedpur SP, Hazaribagh SP, IG Campaign.

IPS Jaya Rai is a resident of Jamtara in Jharkhand. She has worked as SP in many districts of Jharkhand. After going on central deputation, she is posted as DIG in NIA.

During her posting in Jharkhand, Jaya Rai took major action against cyber criminals. At one time, some of her own senior colleagues had harassed her a lot in Jharkhand.

Today, she has silenced those senior colleagues by playing a role in bringing Tahawwur Rana to India.

Meanwhile, case files and trial court records related to the 26/11 attacks have reached Delhi's special NIA court, sources told India Today TV.

The case files and trial court records have been received by the court staff of District Judge Vimal Kumar Yadav recently - Judge Yadav had in January ordered that all trial court records be sent from Mumbai to Delhi.

NIA had filed an application before District Judge Vimal Kumar Yadav asking for the trial court records to be summoned in light of Tahawwur Rana’s extradition.
