In Jharkhand about 76.8% of children aged between 14- 16 years know how to use a smartphone. Of these 63.4% report having used the device for educational purposes in the past week while 70% said to have used it for social media during the same period. This data was stated in the fourteenth basic edition of the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 which was released in New Delhi on Tuesday by Pratham co- founders Dr Madhav Chavan and Farida Lambe.

The report further stated that children who used social media were relatively more aware of basic ways to keep themselves safe while being online. About 66% of them knew how to block or report a profile while 56.8% were aware on how to make a profile private and 56.3% could change a password. Awareness on safety was significantly seen to be higher amongst boys as compared to girls.

For the first time in its nationwide household survey, a separate section on digital literacy was introduced by ASER which was administered on children in the age group of 14- 16 years. This included a self- reported question on access, ownership and use of smartphones as well as a one- on- one assessment of children on basic digital skills.

On the day of the survey, 65.1% of boys and 59% of girls from across the State were able to bring a smartphone which either belonged to them, a family member or was borrowed from the neighbour. The teenagers were asked to perform three tasks- setting an alarm, browsing for specific information and finding a YouTube video. The video, if found, was also to be shared with someone via any messaging platform.

In the year 2024, ASER reached as many as 27,649 children in Jharkhand in 720 villages across 24 districts while on the national level about children 6,49,491  were surveyed from 17,997 villages across 605 rural districts in India.

In Jharkhand, the percentage of underage children- 5 years or below, in Class 1 is at 22.7% in 2024 which was at 33.2% in 2018 and 22.6% in 2022.. This signifies that the State is moving towards ensuring that children enter Class 1 at the age of six.

There has been a significant rise in the government school enrollment during the Covid- 19 pandemic. At the national level, in 2024, the government school enrollment is at 66.8% which is close to pre Covid level while in 2022, it was at 72.9%. The state of Jharkhand, too witnessed an increase in the government school enrollment during Covid-19. It was recorded at 83.3% in 2022 but in 2024, government school enrollment at the State level is at 77.4%.
