Actor turned politician, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan, on Thursday urged the Centre to issue commemorative stamps celebrating 50 years of the iconic Bollywood films Deewaar and Sholay.
Speaking in a Parliamentary session after Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar allowed her to speak, Jaya who starred in Sholay along with megastar and her husband Amitabh Bachchan, highlighted their cultural significance and lasting impact on Indian cinema. Jaya stressed that the stamps would honour the films’ legacy and recognise their role in shaping the Indian film industry. Deewaar and Sholay remain beloved classics, making this tribute a meaningful acknowledgment of their enduring influence, said Jaya.
Amitabh has the lead role in Deewaar with co-star as Shashi Kapoor and in Sholay Amitabh stole the screen which also has in lead role Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan. Both films were released in 1975. Jaya and Hema are currently Members
of Parliament while Amitabh and Dharmendra are ex-MPs.
