UP cops capitalise on Delhi sleuths

Thursday, 20 February 2025 | Biswajeet Banerjee | Lalitpur

In a dramatic showdown between two state police forces, a team of Delhi Police officers was detained by Uttar Pradesh Police in Lalitpur while attempting to arrest two constables in a ?1.5 crore fraud case.

The incident, which unfolded on Tuesday, has raised serious questions about inter-state police coordination and protocol violations.

According to officials, five Delhi Police personnel, dressed in casual attire and carrying weapons, arrived in a private vehicle to arrest three individuals, including two Lalitpur police constables-Vishwajeet and Sachin Awasthi-and a third accused, Bikki Raja. However, they did not have a written order or official permission from the UP Police.

The team reportedly stormed into the Lalitpur police station without prior notification, arrested the two constables from their government residences, and apprehended Bikki Raja from his house.

As soon as Lalitpur police were informed of the arrests, they intercepted the Delhi team mid-way. A heated exchange followed, after which the UP police detained the Delhi cops, including Inspector Darshan Singh, for questioning.

The Delhi team was allegedly held for an entire day before being released after tendering an apology, sources said.

A senior UP Police official criticized the Delhi team for acting without jurisdictional approval.

"They came to arrest our constables in a fraud case but did not follow any protocol. They did not inform us or seek proper permissions," the official said.

Further complicating the case, the UP police revealed that the tip-off to Delhi Police came from Ankit Jain, whose sister owns a company in which one of the accused's brother, Vishwajeet, is a partner. Allegations of a business dispute between the two families have now surfaced, and UP Police say they are investigating the financial angle.

This rare confrontation between two law enforcement agencies has sparked concerns over inter-state policing procedures. The incident also highlights growing friction between state police forces over jurisdictional boundaries and protocol enforcement.

"With both sides standing firm on their versions of events, further investigations into the fraud case, the arrests, and the circumstances leading to the standoff are expected in the coming days," a retired police officer said.
