The Hindu victims of Murshidabad violence blame the henchmen of local Trinamool Congress politicians including MLAs and MPs for orchestrating attacks on them that left hundreds of houses gutted and many hundred families leaving the district out of fear.

“We seen a TMC leader Kaushar Ali who is also the elder brother of local MLA from Farakka Munirul assembling men and directing them to attack the Hindu neighbourhoods, he was carrying a gun and even resorted to firing, they hurled bombs through the night and in the morning a crowd came, pulled out an old sculptor and his son who make idols and hacked them to death, we have nowhere to go, our houses have been burnt, shops looted, so much so that we had to flee our houses for hour honour in a single saree and in some cases with newborn babies,” locals said.

Jangipur, Shamsherganj and Sutti towns of Murshidabad, once the capital of Nawabs like Murshid Quli Khan, Aliwardi Khan and Siraj ud Daulah, has been burning for the past one week with a section of Muslim population coming out on the streets to protest against the newly amended Waqf Act.  At least three persons have been killed and 20 others including 15 policemen wounded in the violence prompting the Calcutta High Court to deploy central forces in the area.   

In some areas the terrified women blocked the vehicle of ADG, BSF asking him not to leave the place “or else they will kill us when as soon as you leave.” The women demanded BSF posting in the Hindu localities. “We have no faith in the police as they act as per the wishes of the TMC leaders who have been orchestrating the attacks from the past several days, are we living in India or Bangladesh,” they wondered. When contacted Kaushar Ali however, said he was being framed by his political opponents. Whereas his MLA brother Munirul said his house too was not spared by the attackers. “They are attacking my house also,” he said.

Elsewhere TMC MLA from the neigbouring Bharatpur Humayun Kabir blamed the TMC legislators for the attacks.  “Two MLAs and an MP, all of them come from Shamsherganj and Suti area where the violence took place, they are telling that they have no idea because the miscreants came from outside, it is not possible that things can take place without their knowledge, even if it is so, what their men were doing when the attacks took place, they cannot evade responsibility, it is a shame on Murshidabad if the Hindu brothers and sisters have to flee out of fear.

Curiously during a war of words in 2024 the same TMC MLA had threatened to throw 30 percent (Hindu) population to Bhagirathi “in a matter of hours.”
