In a bid to escape a fire, six people jumped from the second floor of a house in Nangloi's Janata Market area, an official of the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) said on Wednesday.
The blaze, which broke out at 9:45 pm in domestic articles on the first and second floors, prompted a swift response from the firefighters, the DFS said in a statement.
According to fire officials, the distress call was received at 9:45 pm from Y-655, Mobile Market, Janata Market, under Jwala Puri jurisdiction, it read.
Three fire tenders were rushed to the scene and the fire was brought under control by 11 pm, it further stated.
However, six residents trapped on the second floor had no option but to jump to save their lives before the firefighters arrived.
The injured were identified as Pranjal (19), Preeti (40), Pankaj (40), Panav (18), Vaibhav (13) and Sweta (20), it further read. All were rushed to Pushpanjali Hospital for treatment. The incident took place on the night of February 17.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing a massive fire engulfing the first floor of the building and people jumping from the balcony to escape.
An eyewitness said the fire broke out around 9:30 pm when many noticed smoke billowing from the building. The police and fire brigade were immediately informed.
As the flames spread rapidly, the members of two different families were trapped on the second floor, shouting for help.
"Those who were trapped shouted that they would jump from the balcony. Many people standing nearby rushed to bring bedsheets from their homes and six people jumped," the eyewitness recounted.
According to an official from the Delhi Fire Services, six people had already jumped in a desperate bid to save their lives by the time their team arrived.
"Our teams rushed them to Pushpanjali Hospital for treatment. They sustained injuries due to crash landings, but their condition was stated to be stable. We have informed the police, who are now investigating the matter," the official said.
A police officer said that six people had jumped from the second floor due to the massive fire.
"They are currently under treatment and we have launched an investigation into the incident. We are also checking different videos of the incident to know about the sequence of the events," the officer stated.
