The suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) - an automotive disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nervous system - claimed one more life in Maharashtra on Wednesday. 20 GBS patients continued to be on ventilator in various hospitals of Pune district.
The total number of patients, which stood at 111 on Tuesday, rose to 127 on Wednesday, as more number of patients with suspected BDS were admitted to various hospitals in Pune district. A man from Pune had earlier died at a private hospital at Solapur in western Maharashtra. With one more death, the total number GBS deaths in Maharashtra has gone up to two.
A bulletin put out by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of the Public Health Department, Maharashtra said that of the total 127 suspected GBS cases, 72 patients have been diagnosed as “confirmed GBS cases”. Of the total suspected/confirmed GBS patients, 23 are from the Pune city, while 73 patients are from the newly added villages in the areas coming under the jurisdiction of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 13 patients are from Pimpri-Chinchwad, nine from the rural areas of Pune district and nine are from other districts of the state.
