Electrification milestone set on Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut route

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has achieved another significant milestone in the journey of operationalising the Delhi section of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor.

In a press statement, the NCRTC said the Over Head Equipment (OHE) between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan stations has now been successfully charged at 25 kV. This means the section has been electrified and is ready for train operations. Trial runs in this segment are set to begin soon.

This newly charged section spans approximately 4 km and will receive power from the Sarai Kale Khan Receiving Substation (RSS) in near future. The RSS will receive 66 kV electricity, and it will supply 25 kV for train operations and 33 kV for powering stations along the corridor. To enable this, NCRTC has signed an agreement with Delhi Transco Limited and the Gas Turbine Power Station (GTPS). At present, electricity in this section is being supplied by Ghaziabad RSS.

A 25 kV high-voltage cable from the RSS feeds the OHE through a network of poles and cantilevers. These overhead wires are specially designed to support the high-speed operations of Namo Bharat trains, up to its design speed of 180 km/h. The OHE on this corridor is engineered to handle both high speeds and frequent services efficiently.

Namo Bharat trains are already operating between Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar in the 14 km-long Delhi section. With Sarai Kale Khan station also nearing readiness, the trial runs in this section are likely to begin soon.

Sarai Kale Khan is one of the largest and most important stations on the entire corridor. It will serve as the central hub for train operations across all three priority corridors of Phase-1. The station is equipped with four tracks and six platforms—the highest among all stations. To ensure smooth passenger movement, the station includes five entry and exit gates, multiple staircases, 14 lifts, and 18 escalators. Spanning 215 meters in length, 50 meters in width, and 15 meters in height, its spacious layout has been designed for effective crowd management.

Currently, Namo Bharat trains are running between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South, covering 55 km and 11 stations along the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor.
