Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Friday said the growing participation of women in higher education is a reflection of the changing educational and political landscape of the country as he cited the example of Delhi having women as both the chief minister and the leader of opposition (LoP). Addressing the 17th convocation ceremony of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Saxena remarked, “The time has passed when teachers used to give exams and teach you. Now, time itself will be your teacher. The larger share of women receiving degrees, particularly doctorate degrees, is a sheer indicator of the shifting educational landscape. It is special in the context of Delhi when we have a woman as the chief minister as well as the LoP.”
Later in a tweet, the Lieutenant Governor said, “It is heartening to share the high percentage of women among the degree recipients, particularly in Ph.D & M.Phil programs where they stood at 68% & 40% respectively. Exhorted the students to commit themselves to the cause of the society and the nation, as they step out of their alma mater and venture into a world of endless opportunities”.
“Also urged them to imbibe the human virtues of ethics, compassion and humility, while contributing to fulfill the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for “Viksit Bharat@2047”. I also laud and congratulate the Vice Chancellor, faculty and staff of GGSIPU for their persistent hard work in making the University emerge as India’s premier institution of multi-disciplinary learning and a beacon of knowledge & innovation, in a short span of just 25 years,” he said
