Controversy over Imran Masood playing Holi

Sunday, 16 March 2025 | Biswajeet Banerjee | Lucknow

Saharanpur Congress MP Imran Masood has found himself at the centre of controversy after playing Holi with Hindu activists in Deoband during the festival of colours. The Ulema, the Islamic clerics, have criticised his actions, stating that a Muslim should adhere to Shariat and refrain from engaging in non-religious traditions.

Chairman of the Online Fatwa Department, Maulana Mufti Arshad Farooqui, expressed strong disapproval, saying, “Performing non-Islamic acts is strictly prohibited in Islam. Such anti-Islamic practices are absolutely wrong and are not permissible under Shariat.”

Farooqui further emphasised that while Islam advocates respect for all religions, there are other ways to foster brotherhood without violating religious principles. “This kind of practice goes against Islamic teachings,” he added. Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora, Patron of Jamiat Dawatul Muslimeen and a renowned Islamic scholar, echoed similar sentiments. “There are numerous other ways to promote unity and brotherhood. Adopting non-religious traditions is incorrect from an Islamic perspective. One should repent for such actions,” he stated. The controversy has sparked debate within the community, with some supporting Masood’s gesture as a step towards communal harmony, while others see it as a violation of religious norms. The incident highlights the delicate balance between cultural integration and religious adherence in a diverse society like India. However, the controversy comes at a time when Holi and Friday prayers coincided in Uttar Pradesh. In a remarkable gesture of communal harmony, Muslims in Deoband offered their Friday prayers at 2:30 pm, after Hindus had finished playing Holi. This peaceful coordination between the two communities was seen as a symbol of unity and respect for each other’s traditions.

Local residents appreciated the gesture, with one community leader stating, “This act of mutual respect and cooperation reflects the true spirit of unity that our society stands for. Despite religious differences, we can celebrate peace and harmony together.”
