College professor flees amid sexual abuse allegations

Wednesday, 19 March 2025 | Biswajeet Banerjee | Lucknow

In a shocking case from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, police are on the lookout for Rajnish Kumar, the suspended Chief Proctor of Seth Phool Chand Bagla PG College, commonly known as ‘Old Degree College’.

Kumar is accused of sexually exploiting students and recording the acts to blackmail them. The college administration suspended him following the emergence of these serious allegations.

The case came to light after an anonymous letter, received by the police nearly ten months ago, accused Kumar of coercing students into sexual acts in exchange for passing marks and job opportunities. The letter accused Dr Rajneesh, of sexually harassing female students. Following this, CO City initiated an inquiry, during which multiple individuals were questioned.

“I fear for my life, which is why I have concealed my identity. But aren’t the pictures I provided enough to prove his crime?” the letter read.

The complaint letter was accompanied by around twelve photographs, some of which were taken inside the college premises. These images reportedly depicted the professor engaging in inappropriate behaviour with students.

Along with the complaint, a pen drive containing 59 explicit videos of Kumar engaging in sexual acts with students was also submitted.

The faces of the victims have been blurred to protect their identities. Reports suggest Kumar used hidden cameras to record these acts and later blackmailed the victims into submission. The complainant also accused other members of the college administration of shielding Kumar.

Following the registration of a case under sections related to rape, sexual harassment, and abuse of authority, Kumar was suspended from his position.

However, he remains absconding. The police admitted that the absence of a statement from the victim has posed a challenge in their investigation. The videos, reportedly dating back to 2023, serve as crucial evidence, but the victims fear coming forward due to social stigma and potential harassment.

Authorities are also examining whether Dr Rajneesh had accomplices or if similar incidents have taken place previously.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made to remove the explicit videos from online platforms and prevent their further circulation.

In response to the allegations, the college administration has taken disciplinary action against Dr Rajneesh.
