After Allahabad High Court it is the turn of the country’s oldest Calcutta High Court to protest against the posting of alleged tainted judges. Various lawyers’ associations on Tuesday observed “demonstration” in protest against the posting of a Delhi High Court judge — to the Calcutta High Court, sources said.
The protest comes close after the three lawyers’ associations writing a letter to the Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. In the letter they urged Justice Khanna to reconsider the posting of the said “tainted” judge to the Calcutta High Court.
A joint memorandum by the three associations read, “The members unanimously agreed that the present situation falls under the rarest of rare category as the Calcutta High Court is being compelled to accept a judge facing serious allegations. They also agreed that the same would be an imminent threat to the honour of our High Court.”
Sabyasachi Choudhury, Secretary of the Bar Association on Tuesday said, “Calcutta High Court is not a dumping ground for judges. We have received information that the transfer is not routine. If the decision is not changed then none of us will attend his swearing-in ceremony… and movement will go on.”
