BJP leader and former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Gurez, Faqeer Mohammad Khan was found dead at his official residence in Tulsi Bagh, Srinagar,on Thursday.
Initial reports indicate that he died by suicide, having shot himself with a firearm.
Images of Khan, with a firearm by his side, went viral on various social media platforms soon after the news of his death under mysterious circumstances spread like wildfire.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The 62-year-old former Member of the Legislative Assembly had joined BJP in March 2020 and later contested the 2024 Assembly polls from the Gurez Assembly constituency.
Khan was defeated by the National Conference candidate Nazir Gurezi by a margin of 1132 votes.
The news of Khan’s suicide was announced in the Assembly by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah after which the House observed a two-minute silence to pay homage to the departed soul.
“I express condolences over the sad news. We pay homage to him,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said.
J-K Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma and National Conference member Nazir Gurezi also expressed condolences over Khan’s demise.
