Couple of days after the Punjab Government had submitted before the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it was withdrawing the summons against the senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia issued by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing a multi-crore drug case, the former Minister has been summoned once again in the matter. As per the summons, Majithia is required to appear for questioning on July 18 at 10 am in Patiala.

SAD spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kaler criticized the “political motives” behind the ongoing case, questioning the Government's intentions in prolonging the investigation. He suggested that instead of politicizing the issue, the Chief Minister himself should lead by example and subject himself to questioning. He emphasized the wastage of government resources and time in pursuing baseless allegations.

The summon comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier provided relief to Majithia, allowing him until July 8 to present himself before the SIT. During previous hearings, Majithia’s legal team argued harassment through repeated summonses.

The case dates back to December 20, 2021, when police filed charges against Majithia during the Congress-led Government's tenure. Following the charges, he was detained for five months before being granted bail on August 10, 2022. Majithia has consistently denied any involvement in the alleged drug trafficking and criticized the lack of formal charges or recoveries made against him.

SAD leader’s legal representatives have argued that the continued harassment through summonses without substantive charges undermines justice and smacks of political vendetta. They have questioned the fairness of the investigation process, emphasizing the absence of concrete evidence to support the allegations.
