Punjab, grappling with an alarming series of eight attacks on police stations in just 28 days, has ramped up its security apparatus in an unprecedented manner. From protective rooftop nets to high-tech drone surveillance, the state is leaving no stone unturned to thwart what officials describe as a calculated attempt to destabilize the region.
With Amritsar and Gurdaspur bearing the brunt of these assaults, Punjab Police are implementing advanced measures to protect their establishments, while collaborating with national agencies to counter the growing threat of terrorism.
The heightened security measures came in the wake of the fresh inputs by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has also stepped in to provide strategic support to the Punjab Police. As per the recent reports shared by the NIA, there is evidence of a larger conspiracy to destabilize Punjab through coordinated attacks. The targeted police stations have been identified as the primary focus of these efforts.
Investigations suggested that these attacks bear similarities to the infamous “dead drop” model used by Khalistani militants in the 1980s. Security agencies believed that extremist groups are attempting to replicate the chaos of the 1984 insurgency, with the goal of reviving militancy in the region.
The state police authorities, in a determined effort to counter terrorist threats, have introduced advanced safety protocols across vulnerable police stations. Amritsar, a key target in recent attacks, has already seen significant upgrades. Protective nets have been installed on the rooftops of police stations to intercept bombs and grenades before they can cause substantial damage. Similarly, nets have been placed over low boundary walls to enhance their height and prevent projectiles from entering the premises.
To fortify surveillance, police stations in sensitive areas have been equipped with additional CCTV (close circuit television) cameras. The enhanced monitoring system aimed at keeping a close watch on any suspicious activity in and around police establishments. At night, station gates will also be locked as an added precaution.
The top officials have also been asked to take personal charge of the situation, by conducting night-time patrols, reviewing all security arrangements time to time. Special guidelines have also been issued to ensure round-the-clock vigilance, with officers on high alert for any threats.
In addition to reinforcing physical security measures, Punjab Police have deployed specialized units, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Special Task Force (STF), to sensitive locations. The presence of these teams is intended to provide a swift response to any incidents and deter potential attackers.
Modern technology is also playing a critical role in Punjab’s security strategy. Drones are being utilized to monitor crowded areas and police station surroundings. This aerial surveillance is expected to identify any unusual activities promptly. Simultaneously, the state’s intelligence network has been strengthened, with local intelligence agencies focusing on tracking suspicious individuals and organizations.
At the same time, the Punjab Police have urged the citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately. The collaborative approach between law enforcement and the public is seen as a crucial component in countering the current security threats.
Central security agencies are on high alert, closely monitoring the situation in Punjab. A senior police official told The Pioneer that the State Government, in collaboration with the Union Home Ministry, is working to ensure that such incidents are curbed. The emphasis remained on preemptive measures and inter-agency coordination to counter the growing threat, said the police official.
While the recent attacks have sparked concerns among residents, Punjab Police have reassured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order. By combining advanced security measures, rapid response protocols, and public cooperation, the state aims to thwart any further attempts to create unrest.
