Punjab Govt champions Punjabi language in AI; CM reflects on Shaheed Udham Singh’s legacy

Thursday, 01 August 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday unveiled a visionary initiative, pledging to integrate the Punjabi language into the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The groundbreaking move aimed at ensuring that the Punjabi language keeps pace with technological advancements and remains relevant in the digital age.

Mann announced that the State Government has enlisted a team of renowned Punjabi historians, poets, and literary figures to spearhead this endeavour. Emphasizing the importance of this effort, he said: “The integration of Punjabi into AI is not just a cultural necessity but a strategic move to preserve and enhance our linguistic heritage. Our language must evolve alongside technology to remain vibrant and influential.”

Mann, addressing a state-level event commemorating the martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh — a revered figure in India's freedom struggle, recounted his childhood visits to the memorial events dedicated to the martyr, highlighting the deep personal connection and respect he holds for the martyr. “Shaheed Udham Singh’s sacrifice and courage were monumental,” Mann said, adding, “He avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and played a crucial role in our fight against British colonialism.”

Reflecting on Udham Singh’s legacy, Mann underscored the enduring relevance of such historical sacrifices in shaping contemporary Punjab. He praised Udham Singh’s unwavering commitment and resilience, which, he said, continue to inspire the state’s ongoing journey toward progress.

Mann also criticized previous administrations for neglecting essential development projects. He highlighted the Punjab Government's recent initiative to construct the Malwa Canal — a project designed to transform the irrigation infrastructure of the region. “For the first time since independence, our government is addressing this long-standing need…The canal will benefit nearly two lakh acres of fertile land and foster unprecedented agricultural growth,” he said.

Mann’s speech also touched on environmental issues, criticizing former leaders for their lack of concern for ecological preservation. He vowed that his administration would prioritize environmental sustainability, quoting the Gurbani verse, "Pawan Guru, Paani Pitaah, Mata Dharat Mahat," to underscore the sacredness of natural resources.

In addition to these reforms, Mann announced plans to build an ultra-modern stadium and bus stand to harness the energy of the youth and channel it into positive development. He expressed pride in the achievements of Punjab’s athletes, with 19 players from the state representing the country in the upcoming Paris Olympics, and pledged further support for their preparation.

The Chief Minister called on the youth to draw inspiration from Shaheed Udham Singh’s sacrifices and contribute to the state's progress rather than seeking opportunities abroad. He assured that his government is committed to reversing migration trends by creating robust employment opportunities and enhancing the overall well-being of Punjab’s residents.

Underlining the state government's dedication to public welfare, Mann highlighted significant achievements such as providing free power to 90 percent of households and creating over 43,000 government jobs.
