In a sensational incident reported from Farrukhabad, a 24-year-old police constable was run over by a tractor allegedly by the sand mafia in Nawabganj area, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place Saturday night when Constable Rohit Kumar, a native of Bijnor, went to Nagla Chandan on a tip-off about illegal sand mining along with Sub-Inspector Santosh Kumar and Constable Chaman.

When the cops stopped a tractor-trolley and began questioning the mafia, the driver ran the tractor-trolley over Kumar, injuring him seriously, police said. Kumar was rushed to the Lohia hospital and was later taken to a private hospital. He died during treatment on Sunday morning.

Kumar was 2021 batch constable, Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar said. The SP said those involved in the incident had been identified and would be arrested soon.

Three police teams have been formed and raids were being conducted to nab the sand mafia but they all are absconding.

Meanwhile, in another incident reported from Sant Kabir Nagar, a man was killed and three members of his family were injured in a firing incident in Khalilabad area, police said on Sunday.

According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday in Mahue village. The accused, Indrajeet Yadav, and others were working on a piece of land when a dispute broke out between them and the victim’s family, Additional Superintendent of Police Shashi Shekhar Singh said.

Yadav and his associates attacked Dharmendra Yadav (30) and his family with sticks and rods. One of the accused then fired at Yadav and shot him in the head, Singh said.

Dharmendra and the injured family members were rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Singh said.

An FIR was registered against Indrajeet Yadav, Bodhnath Yadav, Gorakhnath, Sheshnath, PL Yadav and a woman under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the ASP said.

Efforts are being made to arrest the accused, he added.
