A multi-faith assembly marking the 40th anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy was held at the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre in the state capital on Tuesday.
The interfaith assembly, which began at 8:30 AM near the ‘Shraddhanjali and Asha’ Memorial at BMHRC, saw religious leaders from various faiths reciting excerpts from their respective sacred texts.
Following the assembly, 20 gas victims over the age of 85 were honoured. Among them was 108-year-old gas victim Mathura Bai. All the victims were presented with shawls, mementoes, and blankets.
Health camps were also organised at all BMHRC health centres with the support of the Madhya Pradesh government’s health department. These camps provided health check-ups, free tests, medicine distribution, and screening for non-communicable diseases.
The camps also facilitated the creation of Ayushman IDs and Aabha IDs. Rotary Club and Mahavir International donated blankets for underprivileged patients admitted to various wards of the hospital. To commemorate the contribution of BMHRC, which recently entered its 25th year, the Indian Postal Department issued a special cover on the occasion.
Special covers are unique postal items issued to commemorate important events, people, places, or topics of historical, cultural, social, or scientific significance. These postal commemoratives are also issued to raise public awareness about such themes.
