MCD intensifies efforts to control vector borne diseases

Saturday, 01 June 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) intensified its efforts across the national Capital to prevent and control vector borne diseases, while deploying a large number of Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBC) to keep the situation in check.

MCD is taking several measures to control the diseases. One such measure includes deployment of a large number of Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBC) to check for larvae and mosquito breeding. These workers have conducted more than 1.35 crore inspection in different houses in the first five months of 2024. More than 25,000 houses, buildings and land premises were found breeding with mosquitoes which were detected and treated on spot. Further, about 2 lakh houses and buildings have been sprayed and fogged as anti-adult measures. All surface water collections including drains are regularly sprayed with insecticides on a weekly interval by manual & motorised sprayers.

Additionally, intersectoral meetings with different stakeholders of the city are being held to work together in a strategic manner against the spread of vector borne diseases. Awareness campaigns have also been organised with the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), civic societies and citizens to make people aware about prevention and control of vector-borne diseases. Anti-larval insecticides are being sprayed at potential mosquito breeding sites by the corporation.

Dengue is an outbreak prone seasonal febrile viral disease, transmitted through bites of female adult Aedes mosquitoes. Aedes mosquitoes are small blackish mosquitoes with white stripes on the abdomen and legs. Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant clean water in and around houses. Aedes mosquitoes are container breeder viz., cement tanks, overhead tanks, underground tanks, tyres, desert coolers, pitchers, discarded containers, junk materials, potholes, rooftop, window parapet, ornamental fountain, lucky bamboo pot, money plant bottle etc, in which water stagnates for more than a week.

Dengue causing mosquitoes rest in indoor houses, mainly in corners under furniture, beds, shelves, almirah and dark clothing hanging inside and these mosquitoes bite during day time usually in morning and afternoon hours. The civic body appealed to people to cover all water holding containers and tanks with tight lids, emptying, cleaning by scrubbing and drying water coolers at least once a week before refilling. They also urged the people of Delhi to dispose and destroy all unused containers, junk materials, tyres and coconut shells so that mosquito breeding can be checked.
