LG inauguarates NDMC’s cycle track around Nehru Park

Delhi Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Thursday here  inaugurated a 2.7 km long cycle track developed by New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), along the periphery of Nehru Park in Chanakyapuri. Member of Parliament from New Delhi Bansuri Swaraj, Chairman, NDMC Naresh Kumar and Vice - Chairman, NDMC Satish Upadhyay, Council Members Girish Sachdeva and Vishakha Sailani and other Senior Officers were present on the occasion.

Saxena congratulated the NDMC for constructing this one of its kind cycle track in New Delhi area that would not only encourage cycling among the people of all age-groups but also provide them with a safe cycling route.

Considering the needs of the area residents that also include a large number of diplomats and top government officials, the NDMC had envisaged a dedicated cycle track along the periphery of Nehru Park.

The planning of this cycle track was entrusted to the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, and a detailed report was prepared in accordance with the guidelines of UTTIPEC. The cycle track has been developed at a cost of Rs. 4.56 crore.

Total Length of the Cycle Track is 2.7 km and the width varies from 2 to 4 metres. The track has a 150 mm concrete layer and a Cold Plastic Paint overlay of 2 mm thick. Cycle Track is illuminated with 176 nos. of Cast Iron decorative poles fitted with warm LED Lights that enhance the aesthetic of the area.

Warm LED Lights have been provided to gel with the surrounding environment. This track has also Road signage and cycle track markings for the convenience of the cyclists. As many as 90 Red Sandstone Bollards, 228 Hazard Markers, 227 Solar Studs, 191 Speed Breakers and 115 Cycle track signages have been placed along the cycle track.

Nehru Park, spread over an area of 75 Acres in Chanakyapuri, is surrounded by foreign Embassies, High Commissions, apart from State Bhawans, Ashoka Hotel, PSOI and CSOI Clubs. The area serves has the residences of several diplomats, dignitaries and scores of Central Government employees who frequently visit the Nehru Park during the morning and evening hours. The park also falls on the arterial Vinay Marg and Africa Avenue that connects New Delhi to South Delhi, and is adjacent to the Shanti Path- Rao Tularam stretch.

Several individuals and groups of cyclists can be seen cycling around the Nehru Park and therefore NDMC felt that this newly developed Cycle Track for cycling enthusiasts, will further foster eco-friendly and healthy cycling. Now, the dedicated cycle track would provide safety to cyclists and also encourage them to pursue cycling as a leisure activity.
