Jamshedpur seat: BJP on edge as JMM delays its Lok Sabha candidate

Thursday, 25 April 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

As the Lok Sabha elections draw near, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is facing a dilemma in finalising its candidate for the Jamshedpur parliamentary constituency, leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on edge.

With numerous aspirants vying for the coveted JMM ticket, the party leadership is grappling to identify a suitable contender for the crucial seat. The growing eagerness among aspirants to secure the ticket is matched by the escalating anxiety within the party leadership over the delay in announcing the candidate's name.

The BJP has already named its sitting MP, Bidyut Baran Mahto, as its candidate for the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat, adding pressure on the JMM leadership to expedite their decision-making process.

Among the names circulating as potential candidates for the JMM in the Jamshedpur LS seat are Ashtik Mahto, Sunil Mahto, Baharagora legislator Samir Mohanty, JMM spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya, and Sneha Mahto, daughter of former deputy chief minister Sudhir Mahto. Additionally, the party is reportedly considering former JMM legislator from Baharagora, Kunal Sarangi, who is currently affiliated with the BJP.

Significantly, the JMM is leaning towards fielding a Mahto candidate, given the substantial support from the Mahto community, which constitutes 22% of the electorate, second only to the tribal voters at 28% in the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat, designated as a general category constituency.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the Mahagathbandhan had fielded JMM leader and current Chief Minister Champai Soren, who suffered a significant defeat to the BJP candidate, Bidyut Baran Mahto, securing 59.4% of the vote share compared to Soren's 33%.

With the nomination process for the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat set to commence on April 29, the anxiety within the JMM leadership is intensifying. Despite repeated attempts to seek comments on the current situation, key figures like JMM's East Singhbhum district committee president and Ghatsila MLA Ramdas Soren remain elusive, reflecting the heightened tensions and anticipation surrounding the impending candidate announcement.

“ With the Lok Sabha elections looming, the political landscape in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur constituency is witnessing a flurry of activity as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) grapples with the crucial decision of finalizing its candidate. The delay in announcing the candidate has put the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a state of unease, intensifying the race for the coveted seat,” said a BJP leader.

With the nomination process for the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat scheduled to commence on April 29, the anxiety within the JMM leadership is palpable. Despite repeated attempts to seek comments on the current situation, key figures like JMM's East Singhbhum district committee president and Ghatsila MLA Ramdas Soren remain elusive, reflecting the heightened tensions and anticipation surrounding the impending candidate announcement.

As the political suspense continues to mount in Jamshedpur, all eyes are on the JMM leadership to swiftly finalize its candidate and bolster its electoral prospects. The outcome of this decision will not only shape the dynamics of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections but also have far-reaching implications for the political landscape of Jharkhand.
