Jalandhar West Bypoll | AAP accuses BJP candidate Angural, his brother for extortion

Monday, 01 July 2024 | PNS | Jalandhar/Chandigarh

Punjab unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday accused the BJP candidate for jalandhar west bypolls, Sheetal Angural, of involvement in an extortion case, shedding light on alleged criminal activities orchestrated by him and his associates. The “expose” came to light during a press conference held in Jalandhar, where AAP leaders presented compelling evidence implicating Sheetal Angural and his brother Rajan Angural in coercing large sums of money from a victim named Sandeep Kumar.

AAP Punjab’s chief spokesperson and Sri Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang, along with Jagtar Singh Sanghera and Jalandhar district (urban) secretary Gurinder Singh Shergill, detailed the sequence of events leading to the criminal complaint against the Angural brothers. Kang stated that numerous individuals have come forward alleging fraud, extortion, and other illegal activities perpetrated by Sheetal Angural.

The case revolves around a family dispute in Jalandhar, where one Sandeep Kumar, residing in Australia, sought Sheetal Angural’s intervention as a mediator. According to Kang, Rajan Angural, acting on behalf of his brother, allegedly extorted Rs 5.20 lakhs from Sandeep under the pretext of resolving the family’s issues. Kang emphasized that Sandeep possesses recordings of Rajan Angural demanding money, providing damning evidence against the accused.

Highlighting the modus operandi, Kang accused Sheetal Angural of leveraging his political influence while delegating criminal activities to his brother Rajan. He alleged that the brothers introduced Sandeep to Ayub Khan, purportedly Sheetal Angural’s close aide, promising assistance in resolving the police-related issues stemming from the family dispute. However, the situation escalated when Sandeep continued to face harassment, prompting Rajan Angural to demand an additional Rs two lakhs.

“This isn't an isolated incident,” Kang asserted, underscoring Sheetal Angural’s alleged pattern of criminal behaviour. He urged the voters in Jalandhar West to carefully consider the upcoming by-election, characterizing Sheetal Angural as a habitual offender who left AAP for BJP due to purported constraints on his illicit activities under AAP's governance.

Kang contrasted Sheetal Angural with Mohinder Bhagat, an honest and longstanding public servant from the Bhagat family, known for their dedication to Jalandhar's welfare over two generations. He implored voters to reject Sheetal Angural's candidacy, citing multiple criminal cases against him and his alleged exploitation of constituents seeking assistance.
