Heavy rains coupled with thunder, lightning witnessed in Bhopal

Heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning was witnessed on Wednesday evening in the state capital.

Earlier, the city witnessed sunshine since morning and increased humidity made weather conditions hot. Clouds covered the sky in the evening and it started raining.

The water level in Bhopal's lifeline Upper Lake reached 1659.60 feet by Wednesday afternoon. The water has increased by about half a foot in two days. The water level of the pond is increasing due to heavy rains in the catchment area.

According to the Meteorological Department, 355 mm i.e., 14 inches of water has fallen in Bhopal so far. This is 35 percent of the quota. There is a possibility of good rain in the coming days. In such a situation, this figure will increase even more.

The average rainfall in Bhopal in the month of July is 367.7 mm i.e. 14.4 inches. More than 4 inches of water has fallen in Bhopal from 1 to 16 July. Now 10.4 inches of water is needed to complete the quota of July.

According to data from the last 10 years, this is the lowest rainfall in 10 years. The maximum rainfall of 33.6 inches was recorded in the years 2015 and 2022, while 6.1 inches of rain was recorded in 2020.

Meteorologists said that there is a trend of heavy rain in the second fortnight of July. Similar weather is expected this time too. Now there may be continuous heavy rain. This will increase the figure.

It rains heavily in Bhopal in the month of July. There is a record of 1031.4 mm i.e. 41 inches of rain in this month. This happened in the year 1986. On the other hand, on 22 July 1973, 11 inches of rain fell in 24 hours. This is also a record so far. This time the monsoon arrived on 23 June. The figures are better so far. There has been 26% more rain than normal.

Water level also increased in the dam

Half of the city also gets water supply from Kolar Dam. The total water level of the dam is 1516.40 feet. By Wednesday afternoon, the level became 1482.90 feet.

A lot of water is still needed to fill the dam fully. Due to heavy rains in the catchment area, the level will keep increasing. There is currently 1647.63 feet of water in Kaliyasot Dam and 1650.98 feet of water in Kerwa Dam.

This year, 106% of normal rainfall is expected in Bhopal. Last time, there was 18% less rainfall, i.e., 82% (30.9 inches), whereas the normal rainfall in Bhopal is 37.6 inches. Meteorologists say that this time, even though the monsoon arrived 3 days late, it will rain well.
