To contest the poll is certainly not the cup of tea of a person with poor financial strength as these days elections have become highly expensive, at times running into crores. 

As a matter of fact, a former MLA has had to sell his ancestral property to meet his daughter’s poll expenses who is contesting elections this time.

According to sources, the incident has happened in Aul. Though he and his father are former MLAs with their family representing a rich political legacy,  former Congress MLA Debendra Sharma whose daughter is contesting election from Aul Assembly seat this time didn't have the resources required to meet the expenses. Consequently, he sold off his 5 decimal homestead land in his native village at Niala village recently to meet election expenses of his daughter.

Notably, Debendra represented Aul Assembly constituency from 2014 to 2019. “As I am sick and cannot contest the poll ,so my supporters forced my daughter Debasmita to contest the poll from the Aul segment , where I and my father were MLAs from Congress party. But since my daughter will be locking horns with rich and influential leaders including incumbent MLA and royal scion Pratap Deb, who is likely to spend hugely, I decided to sell a portion of  my ancestral property to arrange money to fight the poll," said Debendra.

“Respecting the sentiments of Congress supporters and my father I tendered my resignation from the Government job and decided to contest the poll. I know it is going to be a tough one to cross the poll hurdles against the opponent BJD MLA Pratap Keshari Deb, but I have prepared accordingly,” said Debasmita, who is a doctor by profession and has been fielded by the Congress.
