East Singhbhum readies for elections: 1,913 polling stations set up

Thursday, 17 October 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

With the upcoming Assembly Elections 2024, the election notification will be officially issued on October 18, allowing candidates to begin purchasing and filing nomination forms on the same day. Voting will take place across all six assembly constituencies in East Singhbhum district on November 13, and the counting of votes will be conducted on November 23.

In a press conference held at the Collectorate Auditorium in Jamshedpur, District Election Officer  Ananya Mittal and Senior Superintendent of Police  Kishore Kaushal outlined the district’s preparations for the elections.  Mittal confirmed that the last date for filing nominations is October 25, with scrutiny scheduled for October 28. Candidates will have until October 30 to withdraw their nominations.

A total of 1,913 polling stations have been set up in 1,145 polling buildings across the district, ensuring sufficient facilities for voters. East Singhbhum has a total voter population of 18,73,589, including 9,33,684 male voters, 9,39,742 female voters, and 163 third-gender voters. The district also boasts 2,045 service voters.

Breaking down voter demographics further, there are 6,742 voters over the age of 85 and 15,945 voters with disabilities. The youngest age group of voters, between 18-19 years old, includes 83,750 individuals. The 20-29 age group has 395,106 voters, while the largest group of voters, aged 30-39, comprises 502,451 individuals. Notably, there are even two voters aged over 110 years.

For the convenience of elderly and disabled voters, the Election Commission is once again providing home voting facilities, with Block Level Officers (BLOs) currently conducting surveys to ensure eligible voters can access this service.

To maintain law and order and ensure smooth election proceedings, multiple teams have been formed, including 18 Flying Squad Teams (FST), 21 Static Surveillance Teams (SST), 6 Video Viewing Teams (VVT), 14 Video Surveillance Teams (VST), and 6 Accounting Teams. Additionally, 233 sector officers and 9,182 polling personnel will be on duty during the elections.

Senior Superintendent of Police  Kishore Kaushal emphasized the strict monitoring in place at inter-state and inter-district checkpoints to prevent any illegal activity or interference by anti-social elements. A crackdown on criminal activities is already underway, and licensed firearms are being verified at police stations. Adequate paramilitary and police forces will also be deployed throughout the district to maintain peace and security on election day.

Political banners removed from public spaces

Jamshedpur: The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) for Law and Order,  Aniket Sachan, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Dhalbhum,  Shatabdi Majumdar, conducted an investigation into the removal of political party posters and banners displayed on public and government properties in Jamshedpur's urban areas. The officials directed municipal authorities to take strict action in accordance with the guidelines set by the Election Commission of India (ECI), following the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) on October 15, 2024, when Assembly Elections were announced.

The district is currently under the enforcement of the MCC, and Sub-Divisional Magistrates of Dhalbhum and Ghatsila have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) to maintain peace and fairness in the electoral process. These orders will remain in effect until the election process concludes, covering all assembly constituencies under their jurisdiction.

As per the guidelines, the display of political material—such as slogans, posters, pamphlets, flags, banners, hoardings, and arches—on public or government property is strictly prohibited. Any violation will result in action under the Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1987, which outlines penalties for unauthorized public display of political content.
