A day after the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) election results were declared, the Delhi University (DU) on Tuesday cancelled the election of two central councilors for violating codes after they took out a procession in large vehicles and waving pamphlets in the air.
This comes on the recommendations of the Delhi High Court and the Linghdoh Committee. The university came down heavily on the elected student leaders for violating codes even as the election results were halted for about two months.
Originally, the DUSU results were scheduled to be announced on September 28, a day after the elections took place. However, it was delayed due to a Delhi High Court order which had stalled the declaration of results until the defacement caused during the election campaign was cleaned.
The principal of Kirori Mal College, under DU, took action against both students elected central councillors. The order issued by Professor Dinesh Khattar, said both these posts have been vacated. Khattar has cancelled the election of Chirag and Gurdeep Chawri, both pursuing BA in the first year citing the recommendation of the Lingdoh Committee. They contested the elections with support from BJP's students wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP).
After winning, supporters of the duo celebrated by taking out a procession in big vehicles and throwing pamphlets in the air. This attracted the High Court's ire which came down heavily on the duo for dirtying the campus, which led to a delay of two months for the counting of votes which finally happened on November 24 for 47 colleges and five departments. The voting was held on September 27, 2024.
DU vice-chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh shared his displeasure over the magnanimous celebrations post declarations of results following the decision to cancel the winners. Earlier, the DU had asked all candidates contesting the students' union elections to sign an affidavit pledging to refrain from using dhols, loudspeakers, firecrackers or pamphlets, both in open and closed premises, after the declaration of results.
The affidavit read, “That I shall not use or allow my supporters the use of Dhols, Loudspeakers, Firecrackers and Pamphlets in the open or closed premises of College/Department/Institution/Centre after the declaration of results.”
It also prohibited candidates from organising roadshows or rallies to celebrate their victory. According to the affidavit, failure to comply with these conditions can result in the cancellation of a candidate's victory or removal from their elected post.
