Decision of simultaneous polls in LS, States hitoric: VD

Thursday, 19 September 2024 | SR | Bhopal

Welcoming the union cabinet's approval for simultaneous elections for the Parliament and state assemblies, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit chief and Khajuraho MP, Vishnudutt Sharma, on Wednesday said the decision under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership is historic and commendable.

Speaking at the party headquarters in the state capital, Sharma said that the approval of the recommendations of the committee, headed by former President Ramnath Kovind, paves the way for "One Nation, One Election," a guarantee of the Modi government."The BJP had promised 'One Nation, One Election' in its manifesto, and this is another guarantee being fulfilled by Modi.

After 100 days of Modi’s third term, a solution is being found for a problem that the country has awaited for decades. I express my gratitude to the Prime Minister for this initiative," said a visibly buoyed Sharma. Sharma further said, "We are ready to script a fresh chapter for the nation under Prime Minister Modi's vision; we are ready to write a new history in this 'Amrit Kaal.'

"Simultaneous elections will save resources and help make the electoral process more effective by ushering in a new political culture that strengthens democracy, he said. "If all elections are held simultaneously, it will promote political stability and give governments more time to function.

Conducting elections at the same time will reduce costs for governments and political parties, allowing for better resource utilization. It will enable political parties to focus more on their policies and development work," added Sharma while recounting the benefits of the decision. Sharma noted that between 1951 and 1967, elections for Parliament and state assemblies were held simultaneously, but this practice later broke down.
